Story of her life

She always had the answers to everything. Exam questions, celebrity gossip, facts people don’t know about, even random questions that people asked. You go to her with a problem she’d sort you out in a jiffy. There was nothing she couldn’t do. Be it school, sports, singing, acting, manual work… hell she had her shit together. At least that’s what people thought.

See one puzzle that she never could solve was relationships. Friendship or dateship or courtship… whatever ship, you name it. She just couldn’t figure them out.

Looking back, she always thought she was a great friend. Why is it though that she kept losing friends, especially the close ones? Did she do something wrong that made them turn their backs on her? Or is it just a simple case of ‘bad things happen to good people’? She rarely made friends, at least not with people her age. Kids of course were a lot easier to befriend than her peers. Maybe it had something to do with their innocent bluntness. She liked that, and was honest at all times. Growing up, she always heard that the truth will set you free… and she believed it. Turns out, that’s not the case out here in the real world. “Hey BFF, do you think Mike is the right guy for me? I really like him. I’d like your opinion though. What do you think about him?” “I just bought this dress and I love it, how does it look on me?” These were some of the trick questions she often had to deal with. “Honestly..?” she always asked. But she never gave the correct answer. With time she learned to give the answer that people wanted, and that made her feel like a cheat. She hated that, so one by one she lost her friends.

A hopeless romantic is what she thought she was… Few would agree with her, while the rest just thought she was hopeless. She loved romantic comedies and always appreciated a happy ending, you know those that leave you sobbing? She always wanted one of those, with a prince who would sweep her off her feet. The guys she met swept her off her feet alright… but for all the wrong reasons. A few heart breaks didn’t deter her from searching. Soulmates really did exist and hers was out there somewhere. At one point she thought her search was finally over, but people don’t say looks can be deceiving for the sake of it. Towering well above her with a smile that stole her heart every time he flashed it, she had fallen hard and never wanted to get up. So blinded by love she did not realize when she lost him… to her friend. Suddenly she was back to square one.

With a painfully learned lesson and a mending heart, she started losing trust on humanity. “Tread carefully!!” she always reminded herself. Many years later most of her classmates and age-mates were married with a kid or two and she was there wondering whether to get a cat, a dog or a snake for a pet. Still she wanted to believe that all hope was not lost. Every soap opera she watched had a girl who had gone through a lot but still found her love in the end. Why would she be any different?? All she had to do was be a lottle less naïve, just a little but a lot.
